You've invested in a pair of Nike Air Max Plus TNs — now let's make sure they stay looking as clean as the day you unboxed them. TNs are built tough, but the gradient upper, structured mesh, and Air unit all need a bit of care to stay in top condition.
Here's everything you need to know about cleaning, storing, and maintaining your Nike TNs.
Take the laces out before cleaning. Soak them separately in warm soapy water, rinse, and air dry. Replacing laces is also an easy way to refresh the look of an older pair.
Use a soft-bristle brush to remove any loose dirt from the upper, midsole, and outsole before introducing water. This prevents mud and grit from being worked deeper into the mesh.
Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water. Dip your brush into the solution and gently scrub the mesh upper in small circular motions. The TN's gradient mesh is durable but avoid scrubbing too hard — aggressive brushing can distort the texture over time.
Wipe away the soapy residue with a damp microfibre cloth. Repeat as needed for stubborn marks.
The midsole is often the dirtiest part. Use the same soapy solution with a firmer brush on the outsole rubber. For the white midsole sections, a magic eraser (melamine foam) works brilliantly to lift scuffs and yellowing.
Stuff the shoes with crumpled paper or shoe trees to hold their shape, then leave them to air dry at room temperature. Never put TNs in the washing machine or dryer — the heat and agitation can damage the Air unit, warp the upper, and cause the gradient to fade.
Avoid drying in direct sunlight, which can yellow the midsole and fade the colourway over time.
Prevention is easier than cleaning. Before wearing a new pair:
How you store your TNs matters as much as how you clean them:
Midsole yellowing is a common issue with older TNs, caused by UV exposure and oxidation. A few options:
The insoles in Nike TNs compress over time with regular wear. If you notice reduced cushioning or the insoles have developed an odour that cleaning won't fix, replace them with aftermarket insoles. Nike-compatible insoles are widely available and can extend the life and comfort of your pair significantly.
